LEARN ABOUT GOAT ISLAND MARINE RESERVE
Goat island marine reserve is the first marine reserve in New Zealand which was established in 1975 by the contribution of Bill Balentine, the "father of marine conservation in New Zealand", and his marine laboratory built in 1964. The official name is Cape Rodney Okakari Point Marine Reserve. It protects 547 hectares of shore and sea on the north-eastern coast around Cape Rodney, Okakari Point and Te Hāwere-a-Maki/Goat Island and has now become an important place for many species to breed. Also, it has a great value for those who wants to study the vivid and wonderful marine life and we, the octopus hideaway team would love to help you and your kids to find the gems of New Zealand's breath-taking natures.
Summer sunshine even adds more power in this area and attracts great amount of tourists everyday. People are welcome to swim with all kinds of fishes, dolphins or even eels during the night time. However, to protect our marine reserve, Rules should be obeyed here.
